Lady Jackson blue, the Buchanan family (pink) choice and
Dolley Madison's famous collection. (click to enlarge any
collection and please note the correct spelling of her first name)
Dolley Madison is remembered as one of the most gracious First
Ladies, and the lavish parties she initiated as wife of the Secretary of
State continued when she and President Madison entered the White House.
Unfortunately, while Madison was President the War of 1812 began, during
which the White House was looted and burned. As a result, only a few
pieces of the Madisons' White House tableware remain. The pieces on
display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington are dark buff -
almost a mustard yellow - in color, decorated with a series of wheel
patterns outlined in black. Unlike most White House china, these plates
bear no central motif.
The Polk family selection of Presidential China is
shown. (click to enlarge any collection) The Polk
china is distinctive in the fact that it marks the first time a
shield of red, white, and blue was used as a part of the decorative
motif. This shield reads, "E pluribus unum" and means, "From many
into one". The shield sits atop an elaborate china design with
lovely pink flowers at the center and a border design of pale green
with gold trim. The elegance of Mrs. Polk's French-made china stands
in sharp contrast to her social agenda for the White House. A
visitor there during the Polk term of office explained, "Unlike some
of her predecessors, Mrs. Polk has no taste for the gay amusements
of the lovers of pleasure".

Here on the left we see John Quincy Adams, then
the vibrant green of Millard Filmore and then Zachary Taylor.
Thrust into The White House unexpectedly, some said at the time that
Millard Fillmore "looks more of a President than Taylor". The handsome
Fillmore and his wife Abigail took up residence in The White House in a
quiet, unostentatious manner, bringing many of their family belongings
with them. This beautiful green-bordered design is thought to be part of
the Fillmore family china. Highlighted by a brightly painted bird in a
fine floral bouquet, this design's green border is encased in gold all
of which is hand decorated. (click to enlarge any collection)

Finally we have the Harrison and Monroe collections.
President Monroe had actually three plates we could show you (today only
shown two - middle and right - his personal monogrammed collection
is fully reproduced and available (not shown). The Middle Monroe
plate is from the Monroe family dessert service. Decorated with a green,
white and gold border, these Monroe dessert plates were complete with
floral centers in natural colors. Kept in the Monroe family for
generations since their original purchase, the scroll or feather-like
design on the rim is seen on various examples of French porcelain in the
eighteenth century and was used on both French and English porcelains up
through the early 1800's. President James Monroe and his wife Elizabeth
used these plates at their homes in Ashlawn-Highland during his
Presidency and Oak Hill upon his retirement from office. (click

right) that President Monroe and his wife Elizabeth brought to Ashlawn-Highland
was a French design called "Rose et Feuillage". Great entertainers that
they were, Monroe and his wife believed that France produced the finest
porcelains of their time and loved to use their French dessert services
at every opportunity. It is possible that Monroe discovered this pattern
while in France as Foreign Minister and had a set made for himself. It
is known that France's Louis XVI's younger brother, the Comte d'Artois
purchased three sets of this pattern for his use in his three royal
residences including St. Germain, and his home at Palais du Temple in
Paris. This beautiful pattern was originally produced at the Sevres
factory during the 1770's, with later production coming from the rue
Thiroux and dauborg St. Denis factories.

On the left is President George and Martha Washington's
china - followed by our exact detail of the Titanic China.
Regarding the many questions about George Washington's china: The pieces
of this collection are reproductions of the china that President
Washington purchased from French Foreign Minister Count de Mustier in
1790. Count de Mustier was returning from his assignment here in the
newly formed United States of America and Washington purchased this
china, along with a variety of other household articles. When New York
and Philadelphia were our nation's Capitols, Washington used this gold
encrusted china in his residences while entertaining heads of state, his
Cabinet, and other foreign dignitaries. The original set was made in the
Sevres factory, while the later additions, including the pieces with
Washington's monogram affixed to them, were made in a variety of
factories throughout France. The TITANIC CHINA is a stunning,
cobalt and gold service - which was by far the most elegant china used
aboard the famous Titanic. This prestigious dinnerware service was used
only by exclusive VIP passengers such as New York financier John Jacob
Astor and President Theodore Roosevelt's Chief of Staff Major Archibald
Butt. It is also known that the demitasse English Cup and Saucer sets
were given as presentation gifts to visiting dignitaries and VIPs,
further suggesting its status. (click to enlarge any

The Washington China: George and Martha
Washington received this monogrammed service as a gift from the East
India Company in the late spring of 1796. It is believed that the
original service contained approximately 45 pieces as shown on the
supplement to the cargo manifest of the trading vessel Lady Louisa when
it arrived in Philadelphia. Selected by its captain, Andrea van Braam
Houckgeest, the china was made in Canton, with each piece featuring Mrs.
Washington's initials at the center as well as the names of all 15
states in the union at that time. A Latin motto, "Decus et tutamen ab
illo" appears under Mrs. Washington's initials on a ribbon motif. This
means "a glory and the defense of it." Underneath both initials and
motto is a gold sunburst and a narrow border for each plate bears the
motif of a snake with its tail in its mouth representing perpetuity.
